Supplemental Educational Services (SES) for Weathersfield School, a Title 1 School

October 2013

Dear Weathersfield School Parents and Guardians:

Weathersfield School is a Year 2 School Improvement School. One requirement of having this marked status is to offer Supplemental Educational Services or SES, defined as additional academic instructional services designed to increase student learning for students in Weathersfield.

This tutorial or remediation service happens outside of the school day and in the summer.

Distance and on-line learning is another important option to consider as an SES. The services will be aligned with our school’s curriculum and instructional practices.

Teachers and parents will be providing the necessary information to ensure that the instructional SES plan matches what the child needs to increase their success rate in school. Within this plan, there will be a section defining how the student’s progress will be monitored and reported.

The SES plan cannot be a substitute for IEP and 504 specialized instructional plans, but may be in addition to those services.  A student may receive up to 30 hours of SES in a year and in the event that all students cannot be served, (as the federal dollars are capped per student); we promise to use fair and equitable procedures to serve as many of our students who qualify, as possible.

SES is FREE to students who are eligible for free and reduced meals. If you do not qualify for free and reduced meals, we will consider your children for this service if you can prove the need.  Parents may apply for free and reduced meals at any time.  Let us know and we will resend an application.

Parents get to pick who they want to tutor their children based on an approved provider list attached to this letter, called the SES Approved Provider List for 2013-2014, provided  by Vermont’s Agency of Education.  The first section of this document lists all of the providers you can consider, along with a statement of their effectiveness.  The second section of this document is a chart which includes particulars around services offered, where tutoring would occur, which subjects and where.

Transportation is not provided as part of the SES services offered. If you need help with selecting a SES provider, BJ Esty, Beth Sprague and I are available to review the options with you.  Once you have selected a provider, the school will contact them to see if they are willing to work with us, in which case a contract between the provider and the school will be drawn up and signed.

The deadline to sign up is October 11, 2013, so please make sure to review the information carefully in a time honored way, and please seek the school’s help, if you need it.

Once a SES plan is in place, parents will be surveyed to make sure they are happy with the services.  We are serious about making sure that all parents and guardians know about this FREE service.

This letter will go home with all 233 children who attend our school, on bold, colorful pink paper.  This letter will go out electronically a few times this fall, (and in January, and again for summer school in late spring).

It will be posted, along with a link to the provider list, on our school website and the entire document and letter will be posted in three places in our school building.  It will be announced at several evening events at school and at various board meetings, which are televised on SAPA TV.  For more information, please call the school at 802-674-5400.

Sincerely,
JeanMarie
JeanMarie K. Oakman, WS Principal
