Unruly Sources
Staff Photographer Jennifer Hauck and I stopped
to see the goats while on assignment at Wellwood Orchards in
Springfield, Vt., today. We were reporting on this year’s apple season,
which owner Roy Mark said has been great — particularly in comparison to
last year, when everybody “got froze out” by frosts after unusually
warm temperatures early on.
Steve Justis, executive director of the Vermont
Tree Fruit Growers Association, said that lines up with what he’s heard
from other growers this season throughout the region.
“Certainly compared to the last two years, most
farmers are very optimistic about their crops for this season,” he said
by phone this afternoon. “Of course, we’re never going to be satisfied
until the last apple is in storage or has been sold, but we did have in
2011 and 2012 some pretty serious hail damage and also a lot of losses
because of spring frost, and this year we have really a good crop.”
The goats declined comment but were nevertheless interested in the flavor of my jacket. Read more in an upcoming edition of the Valley News.
