Bev Howe-Fluette Honored at Memorial Day Celebration

Beverly 'Bev' Bradish Howe-Fluette has been placing flags in Weathersfield, VT cemeteries since 1972. She was honored today at the Memorial Day service in Perkinsville. Her Bradish ancestors have been doing this since the civil war, starting with Rosalvo Bradish, her great-grandfather.

This is what is written on the display at the Memorial site on the Green in Perkinsville.

" We do not know the actual date when flags were first put on Veterans graves in Weathersfield.  It is quite possible that Rosalvo Bradish, my great-grandfather, was the first in our family to put the flags on the Civil War Veterans graves.  Rosalvo's name is on the memorial at the Weathersfield Center Church.

Arthur Bradish, his son, continued the tradition of placing flags until his death in 1931, when his son, Edward "Bucker" Bradish took over.

When Uncle Bucker moved from Weathersfield, he passed the flag placement on to his brother, my father, Clifton "Cliff" Bradish.

I , Bev, started helping my Dad, Cliff, place flags in Weathersfield cemeteries when I was about 6 years old.  I helped him off and on through the years.

When Dad (Cliff) passed away in 1972, I took over the family tradition with the help of my husband, Robert "Bob" Howe (until his death in 2009), and occasional help from my children, grandchildren and friends.

For the last two years, my daughter, Lynn Esty, has been helping me. When I am no longer able to place the flags on the graves, Lynn has agreed to take over the family tradition.

In 1983 we put out 225 flags. In 2014 we put out 373 flags.

In 2015 the Veterans Memorial Committee donated 100 markers to place the flags in at the Veterans graves.

The Town of Weathersfield continues to purchase the American Flags we place on Veterans graves.

Beverly "Bev" Bradish Howe-Fluette"

Vermont State Police say they have found the body of a missing woman from St. Johnsbury.

State Police say, 34-year-old Kimberly Willis of St. Johnsbury told her two boys that she was going to visit a friend when she left her house Thursday. Two days later, police found her body.

"We did discover a body, female body that we believe is who we're looking for, Kimberly Willis," said Lt. Det. Thomas Hango, Vermont State Police.

Her family reported her missing Friday and later that evening police found her car abandoned in Albany, Vermont.

Albany is about an hour northwest of St. Johnsbury, the opposite direction of where she said she was going.
The New England Canine team and state police search teams discovered the mother's body near her car late Saturday morning.

The St. Johnsbury Police Chief says, this is suspicious, but police are waiting for autopsy results to learn more about how she died.

"There's a lot of evidence still to collect, to include for example autopsy, toxicology. Continue to do interviews with people who knew her, people that saw her recently," said Chief Clem Houde, St. Johnsbury Police Department.
Chief Houde says her two son's are being taken care of by the state, "Department for Children and Family Services assisted yesterday in placing her sons in protective custody.”

Willis' body is on its way to Burlington for an autopsy.

Police tell us that it will be a couple of days before they know how she died.

Perkinsville Artist Calls VT Open Studio Weekend A ‘Win-Win’

By Curt Peterson
Standard Correspondent

http://vermontstandard.vt.newsmemory.com/

Perkinsville water-colorist Robert J. O’Brien, who has participated in 15 of the 23 years the Vermont Crafts Guild has sponsored Open Studios Weekend, says the event is a “win-win” for both artists and their local economies.

A water color of a peony by Robert J. O’Brien.

“Having multiple studios to visit brings larger audiences to see and buy the artists’ works, and both the artists and the visitors patronize local vendors, spending the money the outsiders have brought into town,” O’Brien said.

The artist has been creating watercolors for over 40 years, 38 of them in Vermont. “I came to the area for a job at a map-making company in Chester,” he said. “I was dazzled by the bright colors and changing light in Vermont, and, after a year I decided to take advantage of them and left mapmaking for watercoloring.”

O’Brien’s paintings capture the contrasts of light and color and shadows. In 2014 alone, his landscapes and architectural studies won him six prizes from various watercolor organizations, according to his website. A Buffalo-area native, O’Brien was educated at SUNY/Fredonia and SUNY/Buffalo; now, he is the educator, operating very popular watercolor workshops full-time.

“I’ve done programs as far away as Hawaii and Alaska in the US, and I frequently hold them in France as well,” he said.

The nearest workshops are in Lebanon and, he says, “Many of my students come from the Quechee, Hartland and Woodstock areas.”

Often more than a dozen students sign up, but he thinks that’s the ideal number for both the teacher and the taught.

O’Brien is looking forward to Open Studios this weekend, which will include a total of 212 participants. “Ninety percent of the studios invite visitors to see their own work, the other 10 percent are galleries or multiple studios that have combined their art,” he said.

The Vermont Crafts Guild website, vermontcrafts.com, has a map, listings and photographs from the participants to help visitors plan their own tours.

“It’s a great way to show off our work,” O’Brien said. “First of all, we artists don’t have to schlepp our work around to galleries. We also forego having to pay gallery commissions, which is nice, and buyers really like to purchase art directly from the artist. I encourage people to get out there and plan a day of visiting studios this weekend. Once they do it, they will make it an annual tradition.”

Gallery at the VAULT is pleased to announce that chairmaker, George Ainley will be demonstrating his skills on May 24 from 11:00 to 2:00. George makes fine Windsor chairs the traditional way: “I start with whole logs, work them with hand tools, and come out with a great product that has classic beauty and utility. The Windsor furniture from my shop is made by the same construction techniques that produced today's antiques which are now prized for their distinct character, beauty and strength. It is an ancient form in which the legs and back are socketed into a solid seat. It got its name in England and was refined in the mid 18th century colonies from Philadelphia to Boston. I have chosen from the early Windsors the best elements of design in shape and proportion. I use the traditional species of wood and keep comfort as my guide.”

Criminal Division Commander
Vermont State Police

The Vermont State Police continue to investigate a missing person, Denise Hart (age 25) who was last seen leaving the residence of a friend in the town of Sudbury, VT during the evening hours of Sunday, January 25th, 2015.

Detectives with the Vermont State Police Bureau of Criminal Investigation became aware that Hart was missing on the night of January 31, 2015. Since that time, a team of detectives has been continuously investigating the circumstances of Hart's disappearance.

Detectives determined early on that Hart had been driving a 2001 Silver Pontiac Grand AM that she had borrowed from an acquaintance and that she reportedly left in this vehicle on the night of January 25th.

Investigation revealed that during the early morning hours of Monday, January 26th, 2015 the Vermont State Police received a report of a car fire at the Cornwall Covered Bridge fishing access, located on Swamp Road in the town of Cornwall. Vermont State Police and the Cornwall Fire Department responded to find a vehicle fully engulfed. This vehicle was identified as the same vehicle reportedly driven by Denis Hart when she was last seen.

Detectives have conducted numerous interviews with individuals who may have had contact with Hart in the weeks and months leading up to her disappearance. On Wednesday, February 11th, a search was conducted on a property located in the town of Sudbury. This search included members of the Vermont State Police Crime Scene Search Team, the Search & Rescue Team, Department of Fish and Wildlife and air support provided by the U.S. Border Patrol.

Based on the investigation to this point there is a strong indication of foul play. Detectives continue to follow up on active leads and strongly encourage anyone with information to contact the Vermont State Police at 802-773-9101. Specifically, anyone traveling in the area of the Swamp Road in the town of Cornwall during the early morning hours of Monday January 26th between midnight and 2:00 am.

PRESS RELEASE

Click it or Ticket

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has designated May as National "Click it or Ticket" month. The Vermont State Police, in a collaborative effort with the Vermont Highway Safety Alliance, is urging an increase use of seat belts, child passenger restraints and helmets, especially in the Northeast Kingdom of the state.

Data from the Vermont Agency of Transportation shows that the tri-county area of Essex, Orleans and Caledonia has one of the lowest seat belt rates in the state. Vermont's seat belt use rate is about 84%. The seat belt rate in the Northeast Kingdom is less than 78%.

Lieutenant Garry Scott, the Commander of the Vermont State Police Traffic Unit, will be supervising the extra state troopers patrolling the interstates and other roads. Lt. Scott asks motorists to, "Slow down, drive with common sense, leave early for your destination so you don't have to rush, don't drive if you are impaired, and please buckle up."

So far in 2015, 56% of our deaths statewide were not belted. Evidence supplied by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration shows that seat belts could have saved nearly one half of the non-belted fatalities.

The Vermont Highway Safety Alliance, a collaboration of several state and private organizations concerned about traffic fatalities, bring attention to the low seat belt rate in the Northeast Kingdom, to educate and inform the traveling public about this issue, and to strictly enforce Vermont's Safety Belt/Child Restraint Law.

It only takes a second to click it. Be safe.

Public Service Announcement About Boater Safety for the Coast Guard

Memorial Day Weekend is approaching and quite a few people will be on the water.

Use this week to make sure your vessel is current with Federal and State regulations.

Check the dates on flares (Yes, they do Expire).

Check your fire extinguishers, have 1 life jacket for each person, and don't exceed the vessel capacity placard.

This will prevent you from being sent back to port when stopped.

Another common mistake, your boat plug - make sure it's in.

Have a designated operator because the same rules apply on the water, you will be charged with a BUI.
