PRESS RELEASE

Click it or Ticket

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has designated May as National "Click it or Ticket" month. The Vermont State Police, in a collaborative effort with the Vermont Highway Safety Alliance, is urging an increase use of seat belts, child passenger restraints and helmets, especially in the Northeast Kingdom of the state.

Data from the Vermont Agency of Transportation shows that the tri-county area of Essex, Orleans and Caledonia has one of the lowest seat belt rates in the state. Vermont's seat belt use rate is about 84%. The seat belt rate in the Northeast Kingdom is less than 78%.

Lieutenant Garry Scott, the Commander of the Vermont State Police Traffic Unit, will be supervising the extra state troopers patrolling the interstates and other roads. Lt. Scott asks motorists to, "Slow down, drive with common sense, leave early for your destination so you don't have to rush, don't drive if you are impaired, and please buckle up."

So far in 2015, 56% of our deaths statewide were not belted. Evidence supplied by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration shows that seat belts could have saved nearly one half of the non-belted fatalities.

The Vermont Highway Safety Alliance, a collaboration of several state and private organizations concerned about traffic fatalities, bring attention to the low seat belt rate in the Northeast Kingdom, to educate and inform the traveling public about this issue, and to strictly enforce Vermont's Safety Belt/Child Restraint Law.

It only takes a second to click it. Be safe.
