EAST MONTPELIER, Vt. - The Vermont Electric Cooperative (WEC) is warning members about a phone scam targeting Vermont utility customers.

A press release says callers will claim they are a representative of the company and will tell the victim their account is overdue and they must pay immediately or their power will be shut off. The caller may seek your credit card or debit information over the phone.

WEC says they reach out to members between the hours of 7:30 a.m. and 6 p.m. if a customer is at risk of disconnection the next day. The electric company does not require immediate payment.

A press release says both Green Mountain Power and Vermont Electric Cooperative both have reports regarding this scam. Anyone who receives a call should contact their local authorities and report the incident.
