The woods are quiet, dark and deep. If you're out hunting or watching wildlife this holiday weekend, you need to be prepared to be out in cold, wintery weather. Follow these 5 simple steps every time:
1) Always tell someone where you are going and when you will be back, even if you're only on your own property.
2) Bring a headlamp or flashlight with extra batteries even if you don't plan to be out after dark.
3) Dress for changes in the weather, including down or wool insulation and a waterproof jacket.
4) Bring a simple 'survival kit' every time you go in the woods, including fire starting materials, a large garbage bag for emergency shelter, a whistle, map and compass, and extra food and water.
5) Charge your phone! A cell phone may be your only resource for help and cold weather drains phone batteries quickly.
Be safe and good luck!
