Motorists Urged to Exercise Caution on Icy Roads

WATERBURY, VT – The Vermont Agency of Transportation and Vermont State Police are reporting icy conditions on roads this morning. Motorists are urged to slow down and take extra precautions – allow yourself extra time to reach your destination and slow down.

Freezing rain and sleet have been falling overnight making untreated roadways slippery. State and local road crews are out working on roads this morning, but motorists should proceed with caution on all routes – particularly secondary roads.

Motorists should also:

• Check road and weather conditions before leaving; visit www.511vt.com or call 511 for this information.
• Avoid traveling unless necessary and always allow yourself extra time to get to your destination.
• Allow extra distance between your car and the vehicle in front of you to allow for greater breaking distances.
• Make sure your vehicle is in good mechanical condition with snow tires and winter windshield wiper blades.
• Watch for and expect changing road conditions, ice, slush, and other hazards can appear anywhere.
• The single most important rule is to drive at a speed that matches the prevailing visibility, traffic and road conditions. The posted speed limits are for dry, clear conditions only.
