To the Editor:
I attended Weathersfield’s schools, graduated
from UVM and have since lived and worked in the general area. I live in
town now and have two young children. Many residents are not aware that
paraphernalia is being sold in Weathersfield, this allegedly being used
for tobacco or drugs.
There are other towns in Vermont that have passed
ordinances that prohibit businesses from selling such items.
Weathersfield did not have an ordinance in effect when such a business
was established.
A draft of an ordinance will be brought to the
Selectboard on Tuesday at Martin Hall at 7 p.m. The purpose of this
ordinance is to prevent the expansion of the present business and to
keep similar businesses from setting up anywhere in town. Because
Interstate 91 runs through Weathersfield and there is cross traffic from
New York state and New Hampshire, we are a prime location for this type
of business.
A group of concerned citizens, which is working through
the Mt. Ascutney Prevention Program, is asking the Selectboard to take a
strong stand against this type of commercial establishment.
We are
deeply concerned about what the future of our town will be like in
regard to providing healthy choices for our children, the overall image
and reputation that we present, and the value of real estate.
Please
attend this important meeting. Your support will make a difference.
