By Eric Francis, Standard CorrespondentMajor road washouts have occurred this evening in Reading, West Windsor, Windsor, Weathersfield and Ascutney.
Several area volunteer fire departments and town highway crews are out trying to shut down dangerous and impassible areas and assess the damage.
All major roads between West Windsor and Windsor, including several stetches of Route 44, 44A, Brook Road and Country Road, are reported to be cut off with up to a foot of flowing water over the roadway in places.
In Reading sections of Route 106 south of the village have “washed completely away” and all traffic between Reading and Downer’s Four Corners has been cut-off. Little Ascutney Road between Reading and Weathersfield has also been shut down.
Route 131 from Ascutney through Weathersfield has washed away near the Jarvis Road intersection and on the Weathersfield side the state police reported that “a big mud dam” had pushed across the road near the Amsden Road intersection.
There was some relief in sight as 9 p.m. approached with fire officials in Ascutney reporting that the water in some of the brooks that had burst their banks appeared to be receding; however, minutes later dispatchers in Hartford radio out that National Weather Service radar was indicating “another massive amount of high intensity rain approaching the Mount Ascutney area from the west.”
The Basin Road in Ascutney was reported to be “completely gone.”
In West Windsor, firefighters were trying to reach two homes, on Bible Hill and Coaching Lane where water was either heading toward the residence or already rising in the basement.
