"Sylvia" - Rambunctious, Unruly!

New chapters open up in the lives of the characters in playwright A.R. Gurney's romantic comedy, "Sylvia." Greg and Kate (Tim Field and Rebecca Skrypeck of Springfield) are recent empty nesters who have left the suburbs behind to explore life in Manhattan.

On a walk in the park, momentarily escaping his boos, Greg is adopted by Sylvia, a rambunctions labradoodle, played by Katie King of Perkinsville. The dog has been abandoned and from the moment she latches onto Greg, he is besotted. And she upends the couple's world.

For Kate, Greg's increasing dissatisfaction at work and his infatuation with the unruly Sylvia, spell trouble. Exhilarated by a new phase in her career, Kate had hoped to focus on developing new teaching programs. Instead, she worries about her marriage.

The couple get moral support from three friends. Greg Villone, of Springfield, plays a fellow dog owner who has books to lend his friend on every subject or problem. Fiona Morton, of Andover, plays Phyllis who tries to hide her innate dislike of dogs but only causes Sylvia to tease and bedevil her. Scott Stearsn, of Ludlow, plays a marriage counselor whose aplomb is tested by Greg's insistence on including Sylvia in his and Kate's sessions.

Humor and poignancy are finely balanced in "Sylvia." Directed by Stephanie Rowe, the story sparkles with insight into modern lives, moments of hilarity, and, for some, a tear or two.

The show will be presented at the Springfield Community Players' Studio on South Street. It runs July 19-20 and July 26-27 at 7:30 pm. For reservations, call 802-885-4098. Tickets are $15 for general admission and $12 for seniors and students.
