Weathersfield, Vt. —
Elsie
Hannah Johnson, 88, a 60-year resident of Weathersfield, passed away
Tuesday evening, March 31, 2015, at the Elm Wood Center in Claremont,
N.H. She was born March 7, 1927, in Cornish, N.H., the daughter of Paul
and Isabella (Clow) Tewksbury.
She received her schooling in Cornish and
Windsor and graduated from Windsor High School in 1945. She later
attended Nursing School in Barre, Vt. She married Howard L. Johnson in
Cornish on Sept. 18, 1948. Mrs. Johnson was employed as a Licensed
Practical Nurse at Springfield Hospital in Springfield, Vt., and later
at Mt. Ascutney Hospital in Windsor for 25 years. She most recently
drove a school bus for the Town of Weathersfield for twenty-three years
until her retirement in 1991. While working, she and her husband
maintained a milk route for Butterick Creamery of West Lebanon and owned
and operated a rural gas business in Claremont, N.H.
Elsie was a member of the Connecticut River
Grange in Ascutney, a member of the Council on Aging and a longtime
member of the Ascutney Union Church. She also served as Health Officer
for the town of Weathersfield. She enjoyed fishing, hunting, gardening
and traveling.
Mr. Johnson passed away in 1986. She was also
predeceased by her parents; by two daughters, Bonnie Wenz in 2009 and
Lena McAllister in 2013; and by two brothers, Eugene Tewksbury and
Rowland Tewksbury.
Survivors include two sons, John Johnson and his
wife Diane, and Edward Johnson all of Weathersfield Center; one
daughter, Mary Lawlor and her husband, Richard of Silver Springs, Md.;
three brothers, Louis Tewksbury and his wife, Connie of Charlestown,
N.H., Raymond Tewksbury of Claremont, and Tharon Tewksbury and his wife,
Lucy of Unity, N.H.; one sister, Josephine Jewell and her husband,
Milton of Cornish; two sons-in-law, Don Wenz of Grantham, N.H., and
Norman McAllister of Highgate, Vt., two sisters-in-law, Lorraine
Tewksbury and Claire Tewksbury, both of Claremont; a longtime friend,
Wanna Baker of Weathersfield; seven grandchildren; eleven
great-grandchildren; several nieces, nephews and cousins; and her two
cats, Bear and Whiskers.
Visitation will be held Monday evening, April 6
from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the Knight Funeral Home in Windsor. The funeral
service will be held Tuesday, April 7 at 1 p.m. at the funeral home,
with the Rev. Connie Moser, officiating. A reception for family and
friends will follow at the Cornish Town Hall. Committal services will be
held in the spring in the Edminster Cemetery in Cornish.
