Black River Action Team
Spring has been a long time coming, and so is this news and a call for help with our growing River Dipper program:
We have secured some funding and partners to ...pay for weekly bacteria testing at SIX public access spots this year!
We have secured some funding and partners to ...pay for weekly bacteria testing at SIX public access spots this year!
* Buttermilk Falls swimming area is once again being adopted by Okemo Mountain Resort and will be sampled by Alison Buhler, testing paid for by Okemo.
* Tolles Power Dam swimming hole in Perkinsville will be sampled monthly by Rodger Capron;
the US Army Corps of Engineers will be sampling and testing this site all other weeks, as well as Stoughton Pond. BRAT will fund Rodger's samples, the USACE handles their own.
*Upper Falls Road in Perkinsville will be monitored by Nancy Heatley, as a way of 'bracketing' the village of Perkinsville, above the Tolles Dam. BRAT will fund these samples.
* Greven Field recreation area in Proctorsville will again be sampled weekly by Amy Balogh; testing will be donated by Endyne.
Here's where we need some help:
Little Ascutney Road near Downers Four Corners crosses the North Branch of the Black River, and features a couple of swimming spots;
the main stem of the Black River sports a gorgeous, historic swimming hole below the Green Mountain Power hydro dam.
Endyne is graciously donating the cost of testing at both these sites, but we need volunteers to take the very simple training on proper sampling technique and sample transportation protocols, and commit to sampling once a week (Wednesday mornings) from the end of May through the end of September.
Can you be a River Dipper? Know someone who might be interested?
Please forward, share, tweet, or what-have-you...and let me know if you are interested, I will happily share details as they solidify.
All the best (and think SPRING!)
Kelly
