BURLINGTON, Vt. - Vermont has its first confirmed case of enterovirus-68. The Health Department says Thursday it received confirmation from the Centers for Disease Control & Prevention.

Health officials say the positive result was in a child younger than school age. And they say that child has since recovered.

The result came as no surprise to health officials, who say they expected the virus was circulating in Vermont, just as it is in other states. The CDC says the virus has been confirmed in almost 500 people in more than 40 states and the District of Columbia.

EV-68 is a respiratory illness. It can cause infections with mild to severe respiratory illness, or it can have no symptoms at all. Mild symptoms can include fever, runny nose, sneezing, coughing, and body and muscle aches. Severe symptoms can include wheezing and difficulty breathing.

Enteroviruses are spread just like a cold or the flu, through coughing or sneezing, contact with an infected person or touching surfaces contaminated with the virus.

Anyone can get infected with enteroviruses, but infants, children and teenagers are more likely to get sick.
