The hazards of carbon monoxide poisoning are ever- present, but more commonly cause problems during the cold months of winter.
Hundreds of people die each year and thousands of others suffer nausea,
dizziness, breathing problems, and convulsions from the odorless,
colorless gas. Get into fresh air and call for help immediately if you
ever suspect a carbon monoxide problem.
Vehicle exhaust is one of the most dangerous sources of carbon
monoxide, especially in winter. If you are stranded in your vehicle and
need to keep the engine running for heat, be sure your exhaust pipe is
clear of snow or other clogging debris. You don’t want the exhaust to
back up into your car.
It’s also imperative that any appliance
in your home that burns fuel, like gas kitchen ranges and kerosene space
heaters, are properly ventilated. Clear away any snow and ice around
vents to prevent the gas from backing up into your home.
Carbon monoxide detectors will also help protect you and your family
from a potentially deadly event. A detector is an inexpensive safety
decision that could save your life.
