Subject: BRIDGE MOVE CHANGED TO WEEKEND OF AUGUST 28-31 - Secretary Minter briefs press on upcoming I-91 bridge slide

Hello,

Vermont Agency of Transportation Secretary Sue Minter shared her excitement with the media this morning about the pending I-91 bridge slides at Exit 11 in White River Junction. She said the innovative construction techniques used in this project is faster, smarter, cheaper and less inconvenient for travelers than traditional bridge construction methods. Local media were briefed on the project and walked the site where they saw the sliding beams and hydraulic jacks that will enable the bridge to move into place.

The Northbound bridge slide has been set for next weekend, August 28-31, to allow the contractor more time to evaluate and use methods that will improve the efficiency of removing both 1960’s era bridges.

In the meantime…there will some delay on Route 5 tonight, and long delays tomorrow evening as the construction crew continues removal of the left lane of the existing bridge. Motorists should avoid the area and seek alternative routes.

TRAFFIC ALERT!
Regarding the I91/Route 5 bridge project on US Route 5…

The sawcutting of the Northbound deck on Monday, August 17 (day & night) will require traffic to be stopped on Route 5 when cutting directly overhead.

The demolition of the left lane of the Northbound bridge will require stopping of traffic on Route 5 whenever cranes are removing concrete and girders on Monday, August 17 (night). During the removal of the deck and girders, traffic will need to be stopped on Monday Night /Tuesday morning. Delays will be longer than the 10 minutes allowed during the day.

During the day and night, traffic will need to be stopped throughout the closure weekend, especially during the demolition and sliding of Northbound bridge (Friday, August 21 and Saturday, August 22.) Delays will be up to 20 minutes or longer. Pedestrians will not be allowed to walk under the bridge on these days; a shuttle bus will be provided for pedestrians.

I-91 Northbound Only…
The left northbound lane will be closed Sunday (August 16) at 4 p.m. through Friday (August 21) 6 p.m. Both lanes will be closed from Friday at 6 p.m. until the highway re-opens at 6 a.m. on Monday, August 24.

I-91 Southbound…
The left lane of 1-91 Southbound will be closed (temporary) during the demolition of the Northbound bridge to allow the removal concrete and steel, beginning Monday, August 17

It is highly recommended that motorists avoid the construction area and seek alternate routes during the time when alternating/stopped traffic occurs during the day at 9:00 AM-3:00 PM, at night and during the closure period. During long periods of alternating one way traffic or traffic stoppage the temporary signals will be put on flash and manned by uniformed police officers. If necessary to keep the off ramps from backing up to I-91, motorists may be motioned by the police to find an alternate route.
