Weathersfield News, Week of June 23, 2014

What an amazing week it has been. Our daughter, Ashley, gave birth to a beautiful little girl, Regan Suzanne Smith, at 12:33 am on Thursday, June 21, 2014. Regan weighs in at 6 pounds, 6.5 ounces and is 19.5 inches long. It was a quick delivery once she got going! While Regan is two weeks early, she and Ashley are both doing great and came home from the hospital after a 3 day stay.

Our daughters, Ashley, Mikala and Emma surprised us on Saturday with a 25th Anniversary party at the Hartland Dam. There were lots of friends and relatives there. It was a great surprise and a great time! Our second treat from this party will be a trip to Texas to visit JD & Shirley in Houston in August. Our first honeymoon!!!

In the midst of all of this, I am farm sitting for a friend of mine. Nothing like adding a few more things to the mix. This week will be an easy one without the daily trip to Dartmouth Hitchcock Medical Center to visit with Ashley and Regan. It will save a few miles on the van.

Thanks to the generosity of some wonderful donors, the Weathersfield Food Shelf will now be open every Thursday beginning July 3,2014 from 4:00 PM - 5:00 PM. It is located at the junction of Routes 106 and 131 in Perkinsville, at the former child care center, next to the West Weathersfield Volunteer Fire Department.

Beginning on July 1st, the cost to purchase punch tickets for use at the Weathersfield Transfer Station will increase to $12.50 for a 5 punch ticket and $25.00 for a 10 punch ticket. These prices reflect an increase in the price of a punch from $2.00 to $2.50.

In October, 2012, due to a significant budget surplus in the Solid Waste Fund, the Weathersfield Select Board decided to temporarily reduce the sale price of Punch Cards. Beginning on November 1, 2012, newly purchased Punch Cards began selling for the following reduced prices: 5 punch, $10.00 and 10 punch, $20.00. These prices reflected the temporary decrease in the price of a punch from $2.50 to $2.00. At the time, we thought that this temporarily price reduction would only last for a half year but we were fortunate to be able to continue it for a year and a half.

Existing Punch Cards which have already been purchased for $10.00 and $20.00 may continue to be used after July 1.

Red Barn Bakery Cafe will be opening for business on ,Tuesday July 1st at 6 A.M. under the ownership of Beverly and Josh Savage. The Red Barn Bakery Cafe is located at the intersection of Routes 5 and 131 in Ascutney, VT.

The Ascutney Farm Stand is open again with New hours starting July 1st:  Wednesday - Sunday 9-6; Tuesday - Sunday 9-6.  We have in now Fresh home made bread and apple cider doughnuts. From the garden we have lettuce, spinach, swiss chard and more.

Saturday, June 21 was officially the first day of summer. It was also the summer equinox. We are now losing a few seconds a day :(

I did enjoy Sunday working around the farm and got 1/4 of the garden weeded and fed to the pigs! They loved it! I planted a few tomatoes, cucumbers, peppers, zucchini and summer squash.

Now off riding horses with my friend! Live is wonderful!  Enjoy summer, everyone!
