Olivia Clement Wins Dr. Lovell Award

Olivia Clement receives Dr. Lovell award from Mary Perry, co-chairperson of Springfield Medical Care System’s Development Committee (right), and Beth Brothers, Southern Vt AHEC (left).

Olivia Clement, class of 2014 from Woodstock High School, is the fourth recipient of the Dr. E. Sherburne Lovell Health Career Award.  This award contributes $1,000 annually toward a student’s academic pursuit of a career in health care.  It is funded by the proceeds of the Apple Blossom Cotillion, a project of the Development Office of Springfield Medical Care Systems.

Dr. Lovell was a long-time physician at Springfield Hospital.  His daughters, Melissa Post and Elizabeth David, stated, “While he was a man who never sought recognition for his service in the medical field or in the community, we know he would be honored to have this award named in his memory.  We hope recipients of the award will share the same sense of wonder and fascination with the world of medicine that he did.”

Olivia, who lives in Perkinsville, Vermont, will be a nursing student at the University of Vermont in the fall.  She became interested in a career in health care when she attended the Southern Vermont Area Health Education Center (AHEC) MedQuest program.

To be eligible for the award, students must live in one of the towns served by Springfield Medical Care Systems and attend AHEC’s MedQuest program. Application information for the Dr. E. Sherburne Lovell Health Career Award is available by contacting Southern Vermont AHEC at 802-885-2126 or info@svahec.org.   ###

Weathersfield News, Week of June 23, 2014

What an amazing week it has been. Our daughter, Ashley, gave birth to a beautiful little girl, Regan Suzanne Smith, at 12:33 am on Thursday, June 21, 2014. Regan weighs in at 6 pounds, 6.5 ounces and is 19.5 inches long. It was a quick delivery once she got going! While Regan is two weeks early, she and Ashley are both doing great and came home from the hospital after a 3 day stay.

Our daughters, Ashley, Mikala and Emma surprised us on Saturday with a 25th Anniversary party at the Hartland Dam. There were lots of friends and relatives there. It was a great surprise and a great time! Our second treat from this party will be a trip to Texas to visit JD & Shirley in Houston in August. Our first honeymoon!!!

In the midst of all of this, I am farm sitting for a friend of mine. Nothing like adding a few more things to the mix. This week will be an easy one without the daily trip to Dartmouth Hitchcock Medical Center to visit with Ashley and Regan. It will save a few miles on the van.

Thanks to the generosity of some wonderful donors, the Weathersfield Food Shelf will now be open every Thursday beginning July 3,2014 from 4:00 PM - 5:00 PM. It is located at the junction of Routes 106 and 131 in Perkinsville, at the former child care center, next to the West Weathersfield Volunteer Fire Department.

Beginning on July 1st, the cost to purchase punch tickets for use at the Weathersfield Transfer Station will increase to $12.50 for a 5 punch ticket and $25.00 for a 10 punch ticket. These prices reflect an increase in the price of a punch from $2.00 to $2.50.

In October, 2012, due to a significant budget surplus in the Solid Waste Fund, the Weathersfield Select Board decided to temporarily reduce the sale price of Punch Cards. Beginning on November 1, 2012, newly purchased Punch Cards began selling for the following reduced prices: 5 punch, $10.00 and 10 punch, $20.00. These prices reflected the temporary decrease in the price of a punch from $2.50 to $2.00. At the time, we thought that this temporarily price reduction would only last for a half year but we were fortunate to be able to continue it for a year and a half.

Existing Punch Cards which have already been purchased for $10.00 and $20.00 may continue to be used after July 1.

Red Barn Bakery Cafe will be opening for business on ,Tuesday July 1st at 6 A.M. under the ownership of Beverly and Josh Savage. The Red Barn Bakery Cafe is located at the intersection of Routes 5 and 131 in Ascutney, VT.

The Ascutney Farm Stand is open again with New hours starting July 1st:  Wednesday - Sunday 9-6; Tuesday - Sunday 9-6.  We have in now Fresh home made bread and apple cider doughnuts. From the garden we have lettuce, spinach, swiss chard and more.

Saturday, June 21 was officially the first day of summer. It was also the summer equinox. We are now losing a few seconds a day :(

I did enjoy Sunday working around the farm and got 1/4 of the garden weeded and fed to the pigs! They loved it! I planted a few tomatoes, cucumbers, peppers, zucchini and summer squash.

Now off riding horses with my friend! Live is wonderful!  Enjoy summer, everyone!

Weathersfield News, Week of June 30, 2014

What another beautiful weekend. Summer is certainly here :) I've been riding horses, lawnmowers and weeding the garden!

Thanks to my husband arriving just as I was giving up, the garden is finally, completely, planted. The pigs LOVED the weeds we pulled. We only planted about half the garden we usually have, but it will be more than enough this year. No potatoes or corn. Tomatoes, zucchini, summer squash, peppers, cucumbers, two kinds of lettuce and pumpkins!

Baby Regan will be two weeks old by the time you are reading this! Where has the time gone!!! She is absolutely adorable and wonderful! I'm so in love with this little girl!  It so makes me remember the early days when my girls were young... I miss those days - a little. It's nice to not have to worry about feeding, changing, naps, etc. I get to come and go as I please. I look forward to babysitting for the first time this week!

Not much going on in Weathersfield. End of the fiscal year, Fourth of July on Friday! Whew!  Where has the year gone??? We are more than half way through, already.

~Running Bear will once again be putting on a SPECTACULAR Fireworks show Friday July 4th. This is open to the public. Admission is $5 per adult (16 and over). You will get to listen to WISEGUYS on the stage and at dusk see a kick butt fireworks display. Some say the BEST in the area. Bring you own lawn chair or blanket and ENJOY! SEE YOU THERE!

~Thanks to the generosity of our donors, the Weathersfield Food Shelf will now be open every Thursday beginning July 3,2014 from 4:00 PM - 5:00 PM.

Vermont Guardians Ad Litem - Volunteers Needed

Lift Up a Child's Voice. a Childs Life.
Right now there are children involved in the Windsor and Orange County court systems that need your help. They don't need your money -- just your time and attention. In some cases, these children have been abused, neglected or caught in the middle of a custody battle -- but they all have the same need: to have a judge-appointment advocate who will look out for their best interest. As a Guardian ad Litem you needn't have any experience -- just a willingness to volunteer in your free time, strong interpersonal and communication skills, a passion for helping vulnerable children and the ability to think critically, be assertive, work with others effectively, and use sound judgment. Training is provided and the personal reward is immeasurable. Currently there's a shortage of these volunteers in your community. Can you help? The next training is in September in Berlin.
For more info please contact Nathalie at 802-295-4008 or go to www.vermontjudiciary.org then click on court programs, GAL program.

Open Letter to Weathersfield and Cavendish Residents

Weathersfield Vermont Community
Dear Weathersfield and Cavendish Residents,

I would welcome the opportunity to become your VT State Representative. I am running as an independent. My platform is relatively simple. Milk Cows, Not Taxpayers.

Smaller government, less taxes, more freedom.

I was born, raised and have lived in Vermont my entire life. In 1991 I graduated from Lyndon State College with a Bachelor of Arts degree. I studied History and Economics. As many Vermonters know, if you are to stay here and survive here you have to wear more than one occupational hat. I have worn many. I fully understand the difficulty of trying to make a living in this state.

I recently served on the Cavendish Town Elementary School Board and currently serve on the Green Mountain Union High School Board. I am a firm believer in local control of our public schools. It is never a good idea to have school governance to far from direct service of our children. I am a strong supporter of school choice including independent schools and homeschooling. I place great trust in local citizens and parents to make the most responsible and best decisions for the future of their children.

I am married to Michele Lindberg and we have two daughters, Maya, age 12 and Corinne age 10.

I will be an independent voice and advocate for your freedom.
Yours,
Stu

EEE Virus Detected in Mosquitoes in Grand Isle

By Darren Perron

http://www.wcax.com/story/25915265/triple-e-virus-detected-in-vt-town-sample

GRAND ISLE, Vt. -

"You gotta be careful, especially around dusk. They like phew, swarm, just jump all over you. Go inside and stay out of it," said Margie Wright of Grand Isle.

Wright worried Eastern Equine Encephalitis would make its way to Grand Isle County. And now it has. Tests show mosquitoes trapped June 17 carried the virus. It's the earliest EEE has ever been found in the Northeast.

"Part of why we might be seeing it earlier is that we are doing more surveillance earlier," said Erica Berl of the Vermont Department of Health.

EEE and West Nile virus have both been found in Vermont over the last several summers in several counties. West Nile and EEE are carried by infected mosquitoes and can be spread to humans, horses, llamas and alpacas through mosquito bites. People who get ill usually get flu-like symptoms. But EEE can be deadly, like it was two years ago in Vermont.

"It makes me nervous and yet it makes me understand more kind of my place in the universe. That it's not that secure," said Riki Moss of Grand Isle.

"In 2012, the first time we detected it in people, we had two human fatalities," Berl said.

Since then, no Vermonters have been infected with EEE.

"So we take it very seriously, but it still remains relatively a rare disease," Berl explained.

The state has done aerial and ground spraying of insecticide aimed at reducing the threat in problem areas. But the health department says it's impossible to kill every mosquito. And the threat will linger until after a few killing frosts later in the fall.

"And it only takes one bite," Wright said.

She won't be taking any chances.

"People could die from it, horses could die from it. Yeah, it's very serious. So, I suggest everybody put on their OFF, you know," Wright said.

Using an insect repellent can help, because your best defense is protecting yourself from bites.
If you are bitten by an infected mosquito, look for the signs of sickness.

"When you start to worry is if there are signs and symptoms that your nervous system has been affected and that could be serve headaches, stiff neck, mental confusions," Berl said.

There are some ways to protect yourself:
  • Cover up with long sleeves
  • Wear pants
  • Avoid the outdoors during dusk and dawn; that's when mosquitoes are most active
  • Wear a good insect repellent

Fourth of July Safety Tips from Springfield Animal Hospital, VT

Fourth of July Safety Tips

For many people, nothing beats lounging in the backyard on the Fourth of July with good friends and family—including the four-legged members of the household. While it may seem like a great idea to reward Rover with scraps from the grill and bring him along to watch fireworks, in reality some festive foods and products can be potentially hazardous to your pets. The ASPCA Animal Poison Control Center offers the following tips:

Never leave alcoholic drinks unattended where pets can reach them. Alcoholic beverages have the potential to poison pets. If ingested, the animal could become very intoxicated and weak, severely depressed or could go into a coma. Death from respiratory failure is also a possibility in severe cases.

Do not apply any sunscreen or insect repellent product to your pet that is not labeled specifically for use on animals. Ingestion of sunscreen products can result in drooling, vomiting, diarrhea, excessive thirst and lethargy. The misuse of insect repellent that contains DEET can lead to neurological problems.

Always keep matches and lighter fluid out of your pets’ reach. Certain types of matches contain chlorates, which could potentially damage blood cells and result in difficulty breathing—or even kidney disease in severe cases. Lighter fluid can be irritating to skin, and if ingested can produce gastrointestinal irritation and central nervous system depression. If lighter fluid is inhaled, aspiration pneumonia and breathing problems could develop.

Keep your pets on their normal diet. Any change, even for one meal, can give your pets severe indigestion and diarrhea. This is particularly true for older animals who have more delicate digestive systems and nutritional requirements. And keep in mind that foods such as onions, chocolate, coffee, avocado, grapes & raisins, salt and yeast dough can all be potentially toxic to companion animals.

Do not put glow jewelry on your pets, or allow them to play with it. While the luminescent substance contained in these products is not highly toxic, excessive drooling and gastrointestinal irritation could still result from ingestions, and intestinal blockage could occur from swallowing large pieces of the plastic containers.

Keep citronella candles, insect coils and oil products out of reach. Ingestion can produce stomach irritation and possibly even central nervous system depression. If inhaled, the oils could cause aspiration pneumonia in pets.

Never use fireworks around pets! While exposure to lit fireworks can potentially result in severe burns and/or trauma to the face and paws of curious pets, even unused fireworks can pose a danger. Many types contain potentially toxic substances, including potassium nitrate, arsenic and other heavy metals.

Loud, crowded fireworks displays are no fun for pets, so please resist the urge to take them to Independence Day festivities. Instead, keep your little guys safe from the noise in a quiet, sheltered and escape-proof area at home.
