Iraq vet and girlfriend arrested in Ascutney on heroin trafficking charges

ASCUTNEY, Vt. - An Iraq War vet and his girlfriend are facing heroin trafficking charges after a drug bust at an Interstate 91 park and ride.

The Massachusetts couple was arrested in Ascutney after authorities allegedly watched them trade 1,000 bags of heroin for $10,000. Their customer turned out to be an informant working with police.

James Hernandez, 27, and Ashley Dejesus ,20, denied the charges in court. They could face up to 40 years in prison if convicted.

Police believe the Massachusetts couple may be working for a larger drug trafficker who was busted in Vermont earlier this year, but now remains at large in Massachusetts.
