Carolyn Johnson, 92


 
Carolyn Houghton Johnson, age 92 passed away peacefully at her home on August 13, 2014 after a brief illness.
 
She was born in Lyndonville VT on September 16, 1921 the daughter of Milo and Mary (Davidson) Houghton.
 
She was a graduate of Lyndon Institute.
 
During the war years Carolyn was employed at Pratt & Whitney Aircraft as a Transportation Manager. Later she worked in advertising at the New York Herald Tribune where she was also a member of the Artist and Writers Club. She also worked at the Winston Salem Journal, Radio Station WSJS, the Middletown Press and the Eagle Times.
 
She married Richard Grimes of Tulsa Oklahoma and they had two daughters.
During the 1950’s Carolyn spoke professionally throughout New England on Vermont Humor and is the author of a book and several short stories.
 
In 1967 she married Elmer (Ted) Johnson and moved to Weathersfield.
 
She was employed at Vermont Research Corporation in North Springfield in the Personnel Department for ten years and then became the Town Treasurer of Weathersfield where she served for seventeen years. Carolyn was also the Treasurer of Vermont Cities and Towns Unemployment Board.  She received the Weathersfield Service Award in 1999. Carolyn served on the Board of Trustees at Claremont Savings Bank and was proud to have been the first female appointed to that board.
 
Carolyn was an avid bridge player and loved to bake cookies for every occasion.
 
Carolyn is survived by her children, Judith Block of Newburyport MA, Alison Raymond and her husband, Keith Claremont NH, Kathryn Johnson Boyle and her husband, Ken of Essex VT; her grandchildren, Matthew Steele and his wife, Cassie and children Fallon and Stella, Jonas Steele and his fiancée, Sara Wheeler, Scott Raymond and his partner, Marc McDonald, Dr. Tyler Raymond and his wife, Emily Feleen and Nicholas Boyle of Essex Vt; two brothers, Joe Houghton and his wife, Ruth and Nathan Houghton and his wife, Francelia. She is also survived by many nieces and nephews.
 
Carolyn was predeceased by her husband, Ted Johnson and a brother, Silas Houghton.
 
A memorial service will be held at the Stringer Funeral Home, 146 Broad Street in Claremont next Sunday, August 24th at 1:00PM.
 
Friends and family may call at the Funeral Home from 12 to 1PM prior to the service.
 
The family asks that contributions in her memory be made to either the Ascutney Union Church or the Proctor Library Capital Campaign Fund c/o the Weathersfield Town Office.
 
Carolyn’s family would like to extend a heartfelt thank you to the wonderful women who graced Carolyn with care at the end of her life journey.
