Please Make Plans for Your Pets Early!

The 5th day of July is the busiest day of the year for animal shelters. That is because owners didn't take a few minutes to prepare a safe and separate place for their pets. Many animals don't like the loud fire works and things bursting in the sky. It freaks them out and they take off.

Keep your pet safe at home. If it is scared of loud noises, put it in an inside room with no windows. If they tear stuff apart, you might want to contact your vet to get special anxiety medicine for them. Don't go off to the fire works or a picnic and leave them hooked out, or even in their yard. If they don't have an escape proof kennel, inside is the best place for them.

Also, don't bring them to the fire works. Even the most well behaved, best trained dog will bite under stressful circumstances. Being in a crowd, with a bunch of kids, with booms and flashes of light will put any dog into stress mode.

Also, make sure your animals are up to date on their rabies. Have collars on them with current tags. Take pictures of them with you to prove ownership.

Keep your animals safe and sound... and your 4th of July will be most happy and stress-free!
