A Funeral Mass for Norman R. Cyrs will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 26, at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Springfield, Vermont. Burial at St. Mary’s Cemetery will immediately follow.
There will be a reception to celebrate Norm’s life from 12 to 2 p.m. at the Nolin-Murray Center in Springfield, Vermont. In lieu of flowers, you may make a contribution in Norm’s memory to The Ascutney Trails Association or the Green Mountain Club.
Norman R. Cyrs died peacefully Friday, June 23, 2017, surrounded by his family, at the home of his daughter Katherine in Tigard, Oregon, where he had resided since 2014. Norm was born March 24, 1930, in Springfield, Vermont, the son of Bert E. and Christine (Longe) Cyrs. He graduated from Springfield High School in the Class of 1948.
Norm served in the Vermont National Guard at the rank of Master Sergeant. He worked at Jones and Lamson from 1951 until they closed in 1986 in various positions, including Engineering Checker and Manager of Engineering Standards.
Norm married Helen Ferguson in 1951, with whom he had four children: Steven B. Cyrs (Patricia) of Virginia Beach, Virginia; Robert N. Cyrs (Darlene) of Granger, Indiana; Katherine A. Ellis (John Riherd), Tigard, Oregon; and Patricia H. Dalpe (Keith) of Center Conway, New Hampshire. Norm and Helen were later divorced. Norm married Beverly Stowell in 1980. Beverly died in 1994. Norm married Helen Long in 1997. Helen died in 2012.
Norm was an active member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church, serving as lector for 46 years. He was a lifetime member of the Knights of Columbus, Past Grand Knight and 4th Degree member.
Norm was an avid outdoorsman and hiker. He hiked Mt. Ascutney nearly 400 times. He hiked the Long Trail End-to-End in 1983 in 21 consecutive days. Norm was an active member and treasurer of the Crown Point Road Association for many years and was a Plus member of the Vermont 251 Club, having documented his visit to every town in the state.
Norm is survived by his children; five grandchildren, Scott and Karin Ellis, Jennifer Symonds, Michelle Kovacs (Paul), Shannon Poges and 2 great-grandchildren, Brooke McDonald and Julianna Kovacs.
Norm was predeceased by his parents and sister, Doris Wetherell.
A funeral mass at St. Mary’s in Springfield, Vermont and internment at St. Mary’s Cemetery will be held at a later date.
