Call for Help for River Dipper Program - Please Share! Volunteer!!

Black River Action Team's post.
Black River Action Team
Spring has been a long time coming, and so is this news and a call for help with our growing River Dipper program:

We have secured some funding and partners to ...pay for weekly bacteria testing at SIX public access spots this year!

* Buttermilk Falls swimming area is once again being adopted by Okemo Mountain Resort and will be sampled by Alison Buhler, testing paid for by Okemo.

* Tolles Power Dam swimming hole in Perkinsville will be sampled monthly by Rodger Capron;

the US Army Corps of Engineers will be sampling and testing this site all other weeks, as well as Stoughton Pond. BRAT will fund Rodger's samples, the USACE handles their own.

*Upper Falls Road in Perkinsville will be monitored by Nancy Heatley, as a way of 'bracketing' the village of Perkinsville, above the Tolles Dam. BRAT will fund these samples.

* Greven Field recreation area in Proctorsville will again be sampled weekly by Amy Balogh; testing will be donated by Endyne.

Here's where we need some help:

Little Ascutney Road near Downers Four Corners crosses the North Branch of the Black River, and features a couple of swimming spots;

the main stem of the Black River sports a gorgeous, historic swimming hole below the Green Mountain Power hydro dam.

Endyne is graciously donating the cost of testing at both these sites, but we need volunteers to take the very simple training on proper sampling technique and sample transportation protocols, and commit to sampling once a week (Wednesday mornings) from the end of May through the end of September.

Can you be a River Dipper? Know someone who might be interested?

Please forward, share, tweet, or what-have-you...and let me know if you are interested, I will happily share details as they solidify.

All the best (and think SPRING!)
Kelly

Act 46 Study Committee Hosted Community Forum - See for Further Information

Act 46 Study Committee Hosts Community Forum Tuesday April 11, 6pm at Weathersfield School; childcare provided!

The question is, how shall Weathersfield, and the other 3 towns in our Supervisory Union, comply with the law under Act 46?

This community forum is our best chance now, in our own gym, to talk and listen to each other about what we should do.

Our legislators have been invited; it's in the newspapers; there's a lot to think about, and this Committee has worked for two years toward a solution.

If you'd like to be heard in this matter, and learn more, please come to the forum!

Hartland, West Windsor and Windsor will also hold forums this week, on consecutive nights, with identical slide presentations about our options under Act 46. All meetings are open to the public and we should expect to see our neighbors from all four towns at the Weathersfield meeting - likewise, we are encouraged to attend in the other 3 towns.

For more information, please use the link below:

You'll find the PowerPoint slide presentation there: worth a look in advance!

Please come to the forum and share this with your friends!

DUI, Gross Negligent Operation, Attempting to Elude, and Resisting Arrest

Update On: Suspect Arrested Following NH/VT Pursuit (Published in today’s paper)
CLAREMONT, NH–On Monday, April 10, as part of the investigation into the robbery which occurred at Walmart on April 7, Claremont Police attempted to stop a vehicle at approximately 3:30 a.m. It was believed the suspect in that case was operating the vehicle. There were active warrants for this person in the state of Vermont, and he has a suspended license. This person was identified as Wayne Keough, 39, of Windsor, VT. The Claremont Police Department ended the pursuit at the Vermont/ New Hampshire border. Vermont State Police located the vehicle on Route 12, in the Town of Weathersfield.
Keough was allegedly operating a 1999 Jeep Cherokee. He failed to stop for the officer, and the officer pursued him through Claremont. The pursuit traveled through Claremont and then into the state of Vermont where the pursuit was terminated by Claremont Police. The driver refused to stop, and troopers initiated a pursuit. The vehicle traveled down Interstate 91 south, at speeds reaching 120 miles per hour, said law enforcement. The vehicle traveled off of Interstate 91, and continued into the Town of Springfield, VT. The vehicle crashed in the Town of Springfield, and the operator allegedly fought with the troopers involved. Keough was arrested and transported to the Springfield Police Department for processing. Keough was transported to the Southern State Correctional Facility for active warrants that he had. Keough was a person of interest based on the video of the robbery, said Claremont Police Chief Mark Chase. Claremont Police has additional evidence on the robbery, and at this time there are active warrants for Keough for Robbery – Class A Felony and Reckless Conduct – Class B Felony.
“The warrants have been supplied to the State of Vermont. Keough has a number of charges in Vermont at this time where he is being held, and it is the intention of the State of NH that when Keough has completed his sentence that he be held and returned to the State of NH to answer to these charges and any other that are filed against him,” said Chase.
Bail was set at $1,000. According to the VSP, Violations charged included DUI, Gross Negligent Operation, Attempting to Elude, Resisting Arrest, driving license suspended.
He was expected to make a court appearance today.
