Everything You Need to Know Keep Your Kids Safe on Halloween!

Weathersfield Police Department

 Deep Pagan Thoughts: Halloween Traditions . . . . .
Everyone loves a good scare on Halloween, but not when it comes to child safety. There are several easy and e ective behaviors that parents can share with kids to help reduce their risk of injury.

Walk Safely
• Cross the street at corners, using traffic signals and crosswalks.
• Look left, right and left again when crossing and keep looking as you cross.
• Put electronic devices down and keep heads up and walk, don’t run, across the street.
• Teach children to make eye contact with drivers before crossing in front of them.
• Always walk on sidewalks or paths. If there are no sidewalks, walk facing traffic as far to the left as possible.
• Watch for cars that are turning or backing up. Teach children to never dart out into the street or cross between parked cars.

Drive Extra Safely on Halloween
• Slow down and be especially alert in residential neighborhoods. Children are excited on Halloween and may move in unpredictable ways.
• Take extra time to look for kids at intersections, on medians and on curbs.
• Enter and exit driveways and alleys slowly and carefully.
• Eliminate any distractions inside your car so you can concentrate on the road and your surroundings.
• Drive slowly, anticipate heavy pedestrian traffic and turn your headlights on earlier in the day to spot children from greater distances.
• Popular trick-or-treating hours are 5:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. so be especially alert for kids during those hours.

Hartland Wants School Choice, No Matter Cost

By Katy Savage
Standard Staff

Hartland is considering branching away from Windsor Southeast Supervisory Union to comply with Act 46, the school merger law, because the Vermont State Board of Education decided that school districts can either operate public schools or offer school choice — not both.

Superintendent David Baker has showed Hartland residents how expensive school choice is, about $500,000, but the majority of residents

Note to Ascutney Fire District Water Customers

At long last, Green Mountain Power will be switching over the power to the hydropneumatic building within the Country Estates Mobile Home Park to three-phase power beginning at 8:30 AM on Tuesday morning, October 27th.  The electricity provides power to the pumps that pressurize the entire water system.

The switch over may result in a partial or full loss of pressure to the water system at times tomorrow morning.

On Wednesday, October 28th, a partial or full loss of pressure may occur now and then throughout the day due to the replacement of valves and other parts within the hydropneumatic building.

It is anticipated that periods of partial or full loss of pressure, if and when they do occur, will be brief.

Price of "Punch" to Rise at Weathersfield Transfer Station

Weathersfield Transfer Station

Price of “Punch” to rise
from $2.50 to $3.50

On October 19th, the Weathersfield Select Board voted to raise the price of a “punch” at the Weathersfield Transfer Station from $2.50 to $3.50 effective October 26, 2015. Punch cards already in circulation will be honored at the old price of $2.50/punch.

The new price for a five-punch card will be $17.50 and a ten-punch card will be $35.00.

This is a relatively large increase and warrants an explanation. There are three main reasons for the increase.

  • It was determined a few years ago that the balance in our Solid Waste Fund exceeded our needs. For the last few years, the price of punch cards has been held artificially low by drawing down the surplus in this fund. A surplus is no longer available to subsidize the price of punches.

  • A new state law (Act 148) went into effect on July 1, 2015. That law mandates recycling and prohibits charging for disposal of recyclables. The immediate impact of the new law is that our recycling volume is up 17% and waste volume down 13%. This translates into an increased expense for the Town to dispose of the recyclables we have collected, supported by fewer punches to generate the revenue to pay expenses.

  • The sale of recyclables has historically offset some of the operating costs for the Transfer Station. Currently, due to a world-wide glut in recyclables, most recyclables actually cost the Town money for disposal. The one remaining source of income, scrap steel, has seen a reduction in market price paid to the Town from $200 per ton a year ago to about $80 per ton in September.

As the changes in world recycling markets continue and as Act 148 becomes fully implemented, it’s likely that we will experience other changes. Please be assured that the Select Board is doing all it can to provide trash disposal and recycling services to residents in the most responsible and cost-effective way possible.

Furbearer Trapping Season Begins

 Product Details
Starting October 24 in Vermont, October 15 in New Hampshire, Furbearer Trapping season begins.

Precautions are in order for those who walk their dogs in Vermont and New Hampshire, especially off leash, in the woods. Some traps, commonly known as conibear, or body-gripping traps, can kill your dog.

Baited conibear traps, up to 8”, measured inside the jaws ( 6-1/2" in NH) are legally used at ground level.

To repeat, these traps are baited.

Information is available on the Vermont/NH Fish & Wildlife websites, including dates for each hunting and trapping season.

A conibear trap is also known as a kill trap, for it is designed to humanely do just that. It’s jaws, once tripped, are nearly impossible to open without mechanical aid, especially to the uninitiated.

Know the danger that exists, and restrain your dogs during trapping (and hunting) seasons in Vermont and New Hampshire.

Please pass this warning on to other dog owners you know. Wear some blaze orange in the woods, and put some on your leashed furry friends too.
