Volunteers Still Needed for 23 Arabians

Hi Everybody,

Happy Holidays!  If you haven’t been over to the barn recently, the horses are doing rather well and continuing to grow stronger daily.  A huge THANK YOU to everybody for their support and willingness to volunteer through one of the busiest times of the year.  We wouldn’t be able to care for these amazing creatures without your help.

If this is your first scheduling email from me, please take a moment to review the volunteers rules and guidelines below.  Please let me know if you have any questions.

I wanted to take a moment to clarify a few things for everybody:

1. All scheduling is done through me at the shelter.  I will always confirm via email.  My normal work days are Tuesday through Saturday, so if I’m a little quiet on Sunday and Monday, that’s why.  I try to keep my eye on timely requests on my off days, but it may be until Tuesday until I get back to you.
2. The typed schedule that is posted near the sign-in sheet at Upwey is not accurate.  Heidi posts it early in the week for the shift leads to use as reference, but it is not updated daily.  Do not be alarmed if I have confirmed that you are scheduled, but your name is not listed.  I know this threw several of you off last week.  You can always double check with me if you would like.
3. As most of you know, the grounds and paths at GMHA can be and are rather icy.  Please give proper consideration to the footwear you wear while volunteering.   I would suggest wearing boots whenever possible.  If you have a pair of footwear grips, I would highly recommend bringing them.
4. If you have to call Heidi or me for any reason, please always leave your name and a message regarding what you called about.  We can see that there was a call from GMHA on caller ID, but can not always get a hold of somebody when we call back as there is no phone in the barn.

OK, we need coverage for ALL SHIFTS ON ALL DAYS!   The only exception is the overnight shift for 12/31.

WE ALSO NEED COVERAGE FOR THE 12/27 SATURDAY OVERNIGHT SHIFT, WHICH IS TOMORROW NIGHT.
PLEASE EMAIL ME WITH WHICH DATE(S) AND SHIFT(S) YOU ARE WILLING TO COVER AND I WILL CONFIRM ASAP.

This is the current shift schedule:
AM Shift (7:30 AM - Noon) - includes feeding, filling water buckets, mucking stalls and walking horses
-
Noon Time Shift (Noon - 2:00 PM) - includes 12:30 PM feeding.   We need somebody that has covered other shifts already to work this shift.
PM Shift (2:00 PM - 5:00 PM) - feeding, walking, water, grooming, etc.
Overnight (6:00 PM  - 6:00 AM) -  There are two feedings, one at 8:30 PM and one at Midnight, as well as checking in on everybody and topping off water buckets as needed. The 8:30 PM feeding consists of 1 1/2 flakes (combo 1st and 2nd cut).   The midnight feeding is already prepared in the hay nets hanging on the outside of the the stalls.  You just need to to hang the nets.  If you’re not comfortable hanging the nets, then it’s OK to dump the nets and toss the hay mixture in.  It’s better to be safe than sorry!  If all the horses are doing well health-wise, and there’s no reason to stay, you could leave after the midnight feeding, as long as you were comfortable driving, of course. You can also arrive anytime between 6 and 8 PM for this shift.  We need somebody that has covered day shifts to cover the night shift.

Don’t hesitate to contact me with any questions or concerns.  I want to make sure everybody enjoys their time while volunteering!

VOLUNTEER RULES AND GUIDELINES:

- We need a completed and signed Volunteer Release, Waiver and Confidentiality Agreement (1 document) from all volunteers prior to beginning your first shift.  You can complete and sign the agreement at Lucy Mackenzie Humane Society (4832 Route 44 in West Windsor) or at Green Mountain Horse Association (GMHA - 5491 South Road, South Woodstock, VT).  Copies are available in the Visitor’s Center lounge attached to Upwey Barn.  If you complete the form at GMHA, please leave it in the appropriate folder in the lounge.

- All volunteers must sign-in and sign-out.  The sign-in sheet is located in Upwey Barn between stalls 6 and 7.  This is also where you will find schedules, feeding instructions, and other details.  As the days and weeks progress, feeding and handling instructions will change, so please make sure you check the information boards after signing-in.
- Absolutely no changes are to be made to the feeding schedule or care of the horses, unless directed by Heidi Edmunds.

- All volunteer scheduling will be done by me at Lucy Mackenzie.   My contact info. is below.  Due to volume of volunteers, email is preferred.

- If you are scheduled to work a shift and are unable to make it, please notify me immediately.  My contact information is below.

- There is no cell phone service on the grounds of GMHA, but there is a phone in the Visitor’s Center lounge available for us to use.

- While the shelter location, defendant’s name, and other details of the case have been made public, we ask all volunteers to respect the Confidentiality Agreement.  Absolutely no photographs are permitted, unless authorized by Heidi.  If you are approached by reporters, please refrain from commenting or answering questions.  You can ask them to direct their inquiries to Lucy Mackenzie.

Again, from all of us at Lucy Mackenzie Humane Society, and our friends at GMHA, THANK YOU!

Best,
Jackie Stanley
