West Nile Virus Detected in Mosquito Pools in Springfield

The Department of Health have been monitoring mosquito pools around the state for West Nile Virus and Eastern equine encephalitis (EEE) virus.

On August 28, 2014 five mosquito pools tested positive for West Nile Virus. Three of the pools were in Rockingham. Two of the pools contained Culex mosquitoes which mainly bite birds, but may also bite mammals. The other pool contained Ochlerotatus japonicas mosquitoes which primarily bite mammals.

On September 3, 2014, a mosquito pool in Springfield tested positive for West Nile Virus. The pool contained Culex mosquitoes. The mosquitoes will be less active during the cooler weather, but will still be a threat until the first hard frost on October.

This is basically a heads up that the virus is around. We will keep you informed as we hear more.
