Agency of Ag considering sanctions for North Springfield slaughterhouse
MONTPELIER, Vt. (WCAX) The Vermont Agency of Agriculture is looking at possible sanctions against a North Springfield slaughterhouse.
The USDA. shut the Vermont Packinghouse down for a short period last month -- the fifth suspension the USDA has imposed on the facility since October 2016. The temporary suspension resulted from the mishandling of a sheep slaughter, according to Vermont State Veterinarian Kristin Haas. She says the facility is federally inspected, but the state can also impose its own penalties. Haas says officials want the slaughterhouse to remain open because it is important to Vermont's farmers and food industry.
"This facility provides a necessary resource for a number of farmers in the state and outside the state, too. Without this facility operating there would be a significant void in slaughtering and processing capacity," Haas said.
Mercy for Animals, an international nonprofit group focused on preventing cruelty to farmed animals, is calling for the state to take action.
