Hunting can be one of the most valuable tools for wildlife conservation and private land stewardship.

Come learn the benefits of a good relationship between landowners and hunters, how to make sure it is a partnership that works for both, and how to manage hunter access at a free seminar this fall for landowners.

Co-hosted by the nonprofit Vermont Coverts, department staff will: introduce you to who hunters are and what hunting is and is not; review landowner rights and the laws and regulations that govern hunting; and provide a forum to discuss concerns about hunters or hunting on your property.

The seminar will be held on Thursday, November 9th from 6:30 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. at the Springfield State Office Complex, 100 Mineral Street, Springfield 05156. Main Floor conference room (enter through front doors and turn left).

“While everyone is welcome, this seminar is designed for new landowners and those with limited experience with hunters and hunting,” said Chris Saunders of the Vermont Fish & Wildlife Department. “We’ll address many of the facts and myths about hunting and hunters and we won’t shy away from the real concerns some landowners have with public access.”

Pre-registration is not required. For more information, contact Chris Saunders at chris.saunders@vermont.gov or (802)343-5487.

Reasonable accommodations for persons with disabilities are available upon request. Please include a description of the accommodation you will need. Wilderness Saftey Precautions for This Fall

Vermont Fish & Wildlife
Remember to practice good wilderness safety when you're heading out this fall. Remember that a pleasant, sunny November quickly turn into freezing nighttime temperatures if end up getting caught out after dark. Here are a few simple precautions to follow when heading afield this fall:
• Tell someone where you are going and when you expect to return, and check back in with that person when you are out of the woods.
• Always bring two light sources and extra batteries. A simple flashlight can mean the difference between making it home safely and spending a cold night alone in the woods. A cell phone is not an acceptable light source, as the battery quickly wears down when the flashlight is being used.
• Wear proper clothing and footwear, and dress in layers. Bring along a waterproof jacket and pants, as well as high-loft insulation for keeping warm. Avoid cotton clothing, which can easily soak up water. Instead, choose wool, down, or synthetic materials.
• Bring food and water.
• Pack a map and compass and familiarize yourself with the area ahead of time. A GPS unit is also useful as long as you know how to use it.
• Create a small survival kit and bring it with you every time you head out. This should include several fire-starting devices such as matches and lighters, fire-starting materials, a large plastic bag for keeping dry, a good knife, a whistle for signaling, and extra non-perishable food.
