23 Rescued Arabians - Update

It’s been 85 days since we began caring for the 23 Arabian horses we helped to rescue last year. Nearly three months later, we find ourselves thankful for so much.

First and foremost, we’re thankful for the health and safety of the horses. They’ve steadily gained weight and continue to grow stronger every day. Initially on a strict diet of multiple smaller meals throughout the day consisting of only hay and alfalfa, they now receive four meals a day of hay and grain.

We’re so thankful for the amazing volunteers that have dedicated their time and hearts towards the care and recovery of these amazing horses. They’ve put in for a combined total of over 4,800 volunteer hours to date. We rely on our volunteers to feed, walk, and groom the horses, to muck stalls and to keep the Upwey Barn clean, to transport hay and wood shavings, and so much more. We truly could not be doing this without them.

We owe so much to the community of Lucy Mackenzie supporters, near and far, that have generously donated money and much needed items to the horses care. This was an unforeseen rescue with no budget set aside. Our supporters have continued to be there for us, especially when we’ve needed them most. Because of them, we’ve been able to supply the horses with exactly what they’ve needed to not only heal, but to also thrive.

We’re thankful for the continued support of Green Mountain Horse Association. Because of them, we were able to keep all of the horses together immediately after their rescue. Five of the horses have recently moved on to wonderful foster homes, and all have transitioned remarkably well. Three more are scheduled to go to foster homes by the end of this month. We have a goal of having the remaining 15 placed in foster homes by the end of March.

HOW YOU CAN HELP

VOLUNTEER
Even three months later, we remain very much in need of direct care volunteers. Even if you aren’t an experienced horse person, there are many tasks that can be done with training. We have shifts available throughout the day. We need help with mucking, feeding, walking, and so much more. FOSTER
We still have 15 horses to place in foster homes before the end of March. An ideal foster would be somebody that has cared for horses before and understands the demands and needs of doing so, and should be able to provide food, water, and shelter.
