Speed Enforcement

Speed Enforcement:

Speeding on our local roadways continues to be one of the major concerns from both Weathersfield residents and the police department. The posted speed limits are based on Road Safety Audit Reviews. There are a number of factors that go into calculating the posted speeds. The safety of the persons using the roadway, AND the surrounding environment (e.g. residential or business).

For the past 12 months, certain areas needing enhanced enforcement were identified by the police department and local citizens. These areas included: Weathersfield Center Road, VT RT 131 at Henry Gould, VT RT 131 at Lottery LN, VT RT 5 South at Wilgus state park, VT RT 5 at Weathersfield Bow.

Many people have commented that they have noticed an increased sightings of officers in these areas. The department’s initial plan was to gain compliance through an increased presence, issuing warnings and educating drivers and limiting punitive fines through citations. Statistically, the ratio of written warning to citations was 5-1 (5 written warnings to each citation issued).

Based on feedback and ongoing enforcement, these efforts have not had the intended impact on voluntary compliance. We continue to see vehicles traveling at unsafe speeds. The vehicle collisions we have responded to, speed has been a factor as the cause of the collision and the severity of damage and injury.

The Weathersfield Police Department will continue its efforts to keep our roadways as safe as possible. We continue to ask for voluntary compliance. Officers continue to have discretion when making a traffic stop, with the goal being change of behavior when it comes to driver operating safely.
